As Acoustic Guitar education editoar David Hamburger writes
in the introduction to his newly posted lesson at A.G.
Central, "For members of a certain generation, it's well
nigh impossible to hear the phrase 'house of the rising sun'
without experiencing a sudden aural flash: those rippling
electric arpeggios that kick off the Animals' now-definitive
version of the tune from 1964." Let Hamburger teach you a
common fingerpicking pattern and how to use it to play
"House of the Rising Sun" at

TEMPORARY PICKGUARDS

A.G. reader Patrick Wheatley of Millington, Tennessee wanted
to know if there was such a thing as a removable pickguard
that he could put on his guitar when he's playing with a
pick instead of fingerstyle.

Frank Ford had the answer: Vinyl static-cling temporary
pickguards are made by Picnxr and others. They are made from
the same material as those vinyl static-cling signs that
sometimes adorn the insides of store windows. Lots of guitar
shops use these removable pickguards to allow players to try
out the increasing number of fine instruments that don’t
come with permanent pickguards. While they don’t adhere
firmly, they generally work well enough for a single session
of picking and come right off afterward without leaving a
trace.

GATOR SNACKS

A musician in New Orleans was walking through the French
Quarter with an alligator under his arm. He walked into a
club on Bourbon Street and stepped up to the bar.
"Bartender," he asked, "Do you serve bass players here?"
"Sure do" replied the bartender.
"Good," said the musician. "I'd like a beer for me and a
bass player for my alligator."
