Tips and Advice: Holiday flying with your guitar

During the coming holiday season many of you will be flying
with your guitars to visit relatives and friends around the
country. Whenever possible, carry your guitar on the plane
with you. A standard dreadnought case will easily fit in the
overhead bins of most major aircraft. If you must check your
instrument, try to arrange for a gate check, so that it is
hand-carried to the cargo hold from the jet way and returned
to you on the jet way at your destination.

Some airlines will not do this, and you will need to check
your guitar through the conventional luggage-handling
system.

When that happens, be sure to follow these guidelines for
defending your instrument from the baggage demons. A flight
case is ideal for frequent air travel, but a standard
hardshell case will get the guitar there safe and sound if
you do some extra preparation.

Loosen the strings. This is not for the changes in pressure.
It is to take tension off of the peghead in case the guitar
is dropped or knocked around. The most common airline
disaster is a broken peghead.

Pack the peghead and neck with tee shirts or foam or
crumpled newspaper. This will add further protection to the
instrument's peghead by keeping the instrument from moving
in the case in the event that it is dropped, tossed, or
drop-kicked across the tarmac. Pack the peghead fully and
firmly.

Tape the latches shut. Latches are easily ripped off,
knocked loose, and bumped open during normal baggage
handling, and this will keep the case from sustaining damage
to the latches or flying open.

Music joke No. 372

How many bass players does it take to change a lightbulb?
-One, but the guitarist has to show him first.
-Don't bother. Just leave it out--no one will notice.
-Six: one to change it and the other five to fight off the
lead guitarists who are hogging the light.
-None. They let the keyboard player do it with his left
hand.
