I've been eyeing these the last couple of years and was wondering if anybody in here has owned one or had a chance to audition one? They don't appear to be in high demand. I've never come across one in my travels....

Thanks in advance,
Craig

I play a Carrillo blanca flamenco some of the time (lovely guitar) and one of my ensemble players has a negra--Brazilian rosewood and spruce. I played that negra in gigs for a few months and it is excellent too.

Carrillo's flamencos got a boost when Paco de Lucia shifted his allegiance from Conde to Carrillo a few years ago, leading to the marketing of some Carrillo flamencos with a Paco de Lucia label. Obviously partly a marketing scheme, but Paco wouldn't have done it with lousy guitars. I haven't heard much about it lately--maybe the extra $$$ for the label didn't work.

Carrillo's classicals have a more complex bracing system (the flamencos are simple fan strutting) so they must be somewhat different. Unfortunately for your purposes I can't give you any advice about the classicals. Carrillo's brother-in-law, Casimiro Lozano, seems to be more of a specialist in classicals.

Ask James at Zavaletas about them--he has had both (and the Lozanos) and can be trusted to give you an honest judgment.

Cheers, Dave

We carry all of his instrument lines including the 1A. You are correct they are tough to come by. I have a fantastic concert model (Indian, Spruce top) in stock at a real good price. I need to get it up on the site. I actually met him at NAMM in jan. Very nice man.

That's tempting!! The CG Store HAD one, but
it was snatched up before I could try it.
Some guy came down from Boston, and left Philly with a Carrillo . The CG Store's
# 2 man, John Penn, said it's one of the best
guitars he's ever heard.

I have a Carillo, brazilian, cedar top, bought used on Ebay. I like it a lot. More noteworthy, my teacher - far more experienced than me at evaluating guitars - thinks it was a good value. It is not a cannon, but projects well and I like the tone.

Thanks Dave and fuz.

Phil: Are the newer 1A's coming in with laquer finishes? I've noticed that the older models I've seen on the net are all french polish but the new ones are laquer. Just wondering if it is an across the board switch or whether he offers the option?

Dave: Would you have a preference of a Lozano over a Carrillo in the classical model?

I'm (again) considering adding a spruce top to the collection and just seeking some feedback on the possibilities. The going prices on the Carrillos are a bit tempting...

The guys at the CG Store told me that they'd
have another Carrillo 1a when he makes one!
They had no idea when that would be, so if
Phil has one.........

Damn...Now I want a Carrillo !!!! John Penn
at the CG Store just went on and on about
them a couple weeks ago, and he plays a $7,000 something or other. Why would he tease
me like that ????? He wasn't actually trying
to tease me, but they're not in stock, so...

Yup, It's me again . Here's some info from the CG Store's site: Vincente took over the
family workshop in 1983, and he and his
workers make 4 to 5 guitars each month. The
bracing pattern is based on the Santos Hernandez bracing pattern, with some mods of
his own. And they don't have any in stock !
With an output so small, it's no doubt that
they're not in stock.

I have a Vincente Carrillo Gabriella. She sounds and plays great for me. My teacher commented that it was one of the best sounds he had heard from a guitar in that price range (£2200 plus vat).
I bought it here:

Yeah Phil !!!! I visit your website often,
and then read bits and pieces of what's not
listed. It seems you have some REALLY good
guitars, but........

Hey jdd, What's the going rate on a Redgate?
I'm guessing it's not inexpensive .

Craig, I can't comment on the Lozano/Carrillo comparison for classicals, having played neither. Ask someone who has, such as James at Zavaletas.

Hi all,

The site is updated. Take a look at what's new & of course 4 new concert models all in stock. I will try to be better and add more over the coming weeks. Sorry it takes me sooooooo long.
