After reading frailerdude's response to my idea about putting on a high string, I'm reconsidering it. One of the reasons for doing it is to make it more like a banjo and I guess that could be called "tone". But frailerdude made some good points the low notes. At any rate my playing is not advanced enough to make a majot change in my guitar as my plan would involve putting in toy RR spikes to capo the sixth string. I do have an old guitar that's been sitting in the closet lo these many years and that seems like a good candidate for a high sixth string assuming it's still in playng condition. Switching from 5-string banjo to frailing guitar is not as straightforward as I had thought. I'm trying to use the up picking IMT routine recommended by frailerdude. That's quite a switch from about a zillion years of downpicking but it gets a better sound out of my guitar. Steve |

Amen, Banjer. Just get the IMT (bum-ditty with thumb on the "ty") and your life will change, truly. String experimentation is great fun, but there's still so much for me to explore with the right hand. I had a discussion/frailing jam with Eric Schoenberg of Schoenberg Guitars in Tiburon, CA, this weekend, and a lengthy email exchange with frailer pioneer Jody Stecher last week, and I'm realizing that I have my work cut out for me. There's a whole world to be explored. And we're all in on the ground floor. Exciting times these. c.u. steve baughman |

Frailerdude, you mentioned a while ago, while practicing, that you were using your ring finger for the down stroke instead of your middle finger. Since it's been a few weeks, how do you feel about that now? Are you still doing three fingers, or have you switched to four? |

Yes, the ring finger down-brush is still useful to me when I need to brush during an extra sensitive moment. c.u. steve baughman |

I just spent all day yesterday (Sunday Nov 11) working on the guitar frailing lesson in Jody Stecher's video from Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop. It is MAGNIFICENT! If you want to learn authentic clawhammer on guitar, that video provides a very very cool intro to it. The video is entitled The Fingerstyle Guitar of Jody Stecher, or something like that. Great way to spend a Sunday. Jody's technique is ALL DOWN STROKES, unlike the technique we've discussed in this thread. Much harder for guitarists to learn, but well worth the effort. c.u. steve baughman |
