Check out her new video on her website www.kakiking.com. Great stuff -- could this type of playing win over maintsream or alternative fans who have no idea about acoustic guitar culture (Preston Reed, etc..)?

She might win over a few fans here and there but I don't ever see this getting to be "mainstream" (and that's not necessarily bad). I think a big part of the enjoyment for a lot of people with playing like this is the visual aspect of watching someone play in this manner. Without the visual it just becomes an instrumental, if that makes any sense.

I saw Kaki King recently when she opened for Keb Mo. I was only mildly impressed by her playing technique. I enjoyed hearing about 50% of her songs, the other 50% sounded rather cacafonous. I checked out the "Pink Noise" video, and personally, I think it's a poor representation of her talents. I can't imagine anyone seeing that and wanting to rush out and get her album.

I once saw a Jackson Pollack painting at a gallery, which looked like it could have been done by a chimpanzee splashing paint on canvas. My reaction was, "I guess it looks kind of cool, but does this this guy actually know how to paint? Can he paint a portrait? or a landscape? or does he just know how to splash paint onto a canvas?"

That's how I feel about Kaki King's playing.

I think the video's awesome - the absolutely straight face as she plays. It's not my cup 'o tea musically, but I'm looking forward to her evolution as a musician.

Somehow I think Kaki might like being compared to Jackson Pollock.

As one of what later became known as the "Action Painters", Pollock was among those exploring, or documenting, the physical "act" of painting rather than trying to replicate an image - something that became less important after the advent of photography. The comparison to playing guitar is interesting. Scott, I think you're right. There could be some parallels in her style of playing.

I thought I would weigh in on this-IMHO

First I would like to say its refreshing to see a woman present herself in the all to
often male dominated world of fingerstyle guitar. There are many prominent female classical guitarists but not to many virtuoso fingerpickers of the female persuasion.

With that said, I would have to say my critque of her music would be that it sounds more like musical textures very influenced by altered tunings or extended playing techniques than actual coherent musical compositions. Therein lies the danger when young artists rely on such
techniques rather than true musical substance to make a compositional statement.
Preston Reed, her mentor did not start out playing like that years ago. Rather he started from a Kottke/Fahey point of view and morphed into his present playing style years later, possibly as a reaction to what Hedges brought out in the early 80's. Preston however has the benefit of years of really "composing" for the acoustic guitar so his use of tapping etc, is more integrated into the compositonal statement. Although I do get a since of lack of contrast with his pieces that use
CGDGGD tuning, they all sound like different sections of the same piece. Such problems are not confined to the guitar, virtuoso pianists who decide to compose often have the same problems,
i.e. Franz Lizst.
Check out Heinrich Biber's "Mystery Sonatas" for scordatura violin ,a wonderfull exception to the rule.

Funny you should say that, Scot. When I saw her show this spring, I stood up and yelled out, "Kaki, you're like the Jackson Pollack of guitar players . . . Whooo!"

She smiled at me and said thank you.

As long as you're still a guy that won't help much. I heard she prefered women.

Sorry, maybe it's just me, but I don't like these kind of rumours and I don't see that it is any concern of ours! Whatever the truth, it has no effect on the fact that she is one very talented young lady and her personal life should stay just that, personal. So let's stick to guitars, guitar players and music and leave the gossip to the low lifes in the press who feed on this kind of nonsense (no disrespect meant to serious journalists).

I didn't mean to discredit her. As far as I remember the article she's open about it. I can be wrong about that. Personally I couldn't care less what kind of private life an artist has. Usually we don't know them on a private basis anyway so I agree that we should only judge them by their music.
Sorry if I offended anyone. It was just meant as a tongue-in-cheek comment to bob7989's post.
