Took my sweetheart to see Gillian and David play at a place in our neighborhood in Brooklyn, of all places, last night.

They will be doing two more shows in NY this week, and then back in mid-August to play Central Park.

I found them to be better than ever, more polished, sophisticated, musically brilliant, harmonically tight. They are still quite dry in the humor department, and I never heard David Rawlings talk so much at any of their previous shows. He seems to be coming out of his shell. His guitar playing was sensational last night.

Their set was filled with songs from the newest CD, along with some chestnuts from earlier albums, such as "Acony Bell," "Pass You By," "My First Lover," and others. A lively, talented band called "Old Crow Medicine Show" opened for them, and joined them on stage for a last old-time tune in which Rawlings played a five-string banjer.

One of the more pleasant personal moments which occurred while we waited to get in to the club was a surprise meeting and subsequent chat with Samantha Parton, from the "Be Good Tanyas,'" who was there because the Tanyas are friends with the fellers in OCMS. She was very warm and friendly.

If you are able to catch Gillian and David on this tour, DO IT. They are in fine form, and rockin'.

Howard, I am envious.

I got to see them about 4 years ago at the Station Inn in Nashville. I really like them much better live than recorded. I would love to see them again.

Next time you and I get together, let's polish up Annabelle, shall we?

It would be my pleasure, Shannon. I am currently working up an arrangement of "Dear Someone" from the Revelator CD. It has some splendid chord changes.

Check the website, www.gillianwelch.com for the current tour schedule. I think they are going to be in Atlanta later this year.

Up! Got it:

August 11, Wed.
Atlanta, GA
Chastain Park Amphitheater w/ Sweet Harmony Traveling Revue

Howard,

I would love to see what you come up with for "Dear Someone" (probably my favorite song off that album). Are you doing an instrumental arrangement, or are you transcribing what they played?

Dang. No can do. Just finished three weeks vacation and there is no way I could afford to go even if I could get the time off.
I'm playing Annabelle, Tear My Stillhouse Down, One More Dollar and my girl and I do Orphan Girl. I'm still working on Winter's Come and Gone and that sweet little lick that Rawlings uses. What great songs!

I'm playing it and singing it, John. If I can get my picking partner to learn it, one of us could work up a solo, too, but in noodling, I'm trying to do some of those flatted notes that David Rawlings uses with such panache and success. I'll let you know how it works out.

We already do an arrangment of "Red Clay Halo" and I have my own little thing with "Acony Bell"--I love that song.

Off topic: I played the Fluke Uke that resides at Frazer's house, the other evening, and I daresay I easily could become addicted.

Sounds like a wonderful show, Howard.
I have seen Old Crow Medicine Show--there was a concert by them on PBS one nignt and I really thought they were great. Their CD is produced by Rawlings, so that should tell you something.
Would have loved to have been at that one with both of you.

well, we would have loved it too, LJ. But we don't care so much for the venue; it gets really crowded with mostly standing room, even at the bar. For some reason, there's always someone too tall right in front of me, who hasn't the ability to make their head transparent, regardless of the amount of air within. Maybe I'm simply getting too old and cranky for crowded places. In this case, it was worth it for the great music. I'm even GAS-ing for a 2nd-hand archtop . . . and Cotten Music in Nashville seems to have this one:

Wow. It's a beaut!

I think Welch and Rawlings are going to be in the general area sometime in Sept. I know they are in Goshen, IN(Millring's backyard) on Sept. 10. Maybe I can get to see them, too.
