GREEN BUSINESS
There’s a lot of interest in “green business” entrepreneurship these days (see Nobel Prize–winning economist Paul Krugman’s cover story in the April 11 New York Times Magazine, “Building a Green Economy”). One music-oriented “green” entrepreneur is now making guitar picks out of discarded LPs. Green Guitar Picks is the brainchild of David Harbaugh, a longtime guitarist and entrepreneur, who needed a pick one day and decided to cut one from a scratched LP. Although the “record” may seem to have gone the way of the typewriter, there were approximately 2.9 million LPs manufactured in 2009, but only 1.5 million of those were sold, proving that Harbaugh and his pick company will not be lacking for pick material. greenguitarpicks.com
POLICE SNAG SUSPECT WITH SNAGG
Last summer, Sacramento, California, police were investigating the murder of a local guitar enthusiast whose guitars were embedded with the SNAGG microchip, which is designed to identify instruments in the event of their theft. Detectives took several guitars that were sold by suspects in the case to a local Carvin dealer and confirmed the guitar’s ownership, leading to the arrest of the suspects. snagg.com
K&K MERIDIAN GUITAR MIC
K&K has introduced a new externally mounted guitar microphone that mounts to the upper bout of an acoustic guitar. The Meridian is a unidirectional condenser mic mounted on a gooseneck and an adjustable two-part clamp system made from powder-coated stainless steel with nonskid rubber padding. HOFFEE CARBON-FIBER GUITAR CASE
Hoffee carbon-fiber cases are made of lightweight carbon fiber, in either black or natural carbon finishes. Hoffee claims that the US-made, eight-pound cases are very durable and scratch resistant, and the price is considerably lower ($499 plus $25 shipping to US locations) than that of other carbon-fiber cases. Hoffee is currently making dreadnought and electric guitar cases (the interiors of which can be customized to fit a number of body sizes) and plans to offer classical and archtop guitar cases later this year. carbonfibercases.com
