NEW AT ACOUSTICGUITAR.COM

The September issue of Acoustic Guitar is on newsstands now.
Access these features, articles, and lessons online:
(To access special reader/subscriber features, including audio files and lessons, enter fall when prompted.)

PICKIN' FOR A FIGHT: With more than five decades of singing under his belt and thousands of miles of hard road behind him, Merle Haggard is still writing songs with a vengeance. Interviewed by Kenny Berkowitz, the Hag turns his unblinking eye toward his favorite themes, including love of family, freedom, and country—plus his anger about the war.

ELECTRIFY YOUR AXE: With more acoustic-amplification products than ever before, determining which signal path will best suit your needs can be a real brain-twister. Teja Gerken explains the differences between the various types of pickup systems, as well as the role of other important components—such as preamps, Dis, amplifiers, and digital processors—so you can make an educated choice that helps you sound your best.

NEW GEAR: Pete Madsen explores the sustaining treble, midrange spunk, and exemplary craftsmanship that converge in the new National Reso-Phonic 14-fret Style O, a metal-bodied resonator with extra finger room. Hear how it sounds online.

LUTHIER'S WORKBENCH: A veteran of California lutherie, Steve Helgeson has been building acoustic and electric guitars since the early 1970s. Although he once ran a small factory, he now focuses on making his Moonstone guitars one at a time—and creating his best work ever. Read Simone Solondz’ profile.

READER'S RIG: Dario Saraceno powers his diverse solo and band repertoires with a 1986 Alvarez-Yairi dreadnought and a Godin Acousticaster 6.

We frequently feature one of our readers’ rigs in the magazine and on our website. To be considered, send a description of your setup to editors.ag@stringletter.com

LESSONS AND MUSIC TO PLAY:
(To access special reader/subscriber features, including audio files and lessons, enter fall when prompted.)

  • THE BASICS: In Harmonize Your Bass Lines, David Hodge shows you how to combine bass lines with harmonies based on intervals of thirds. It is a splendid—and surprisingly easy—way to add some spice to your playing. With music to “Come and Go With Me.”

  • WOODSHED: Smooth Moves: When you play songs written for other instruments, does your guitar sound clunky? Even out your melodic lines by using slurs, position shifts, and open strings. By Scott Nygaard. With music to “Bourrée #1, from the Third Suite for Solo Cello, BWV 1009.”

  • LICK OF THE MONTH: Popular roots multi-instrumentalist Orville Johnson shares his fingerstyle intro to the Reverend Gary Davis song “I Will Do My Last Singing.”

    ALSO IN THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE:
An exclusive feature lesson with fingerstyle master Pierre Bensusan; music to “Mama Tried,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” and “If You Could Read My Mind”; interviews with hit songwriter Jesse Harris and resurgent chamber-folk icon Vashti Bunyan; reviews of a new Höfner flattop and the Fender Acoustasonic Ultralight Amp; tips on playing wedding gigs; reviews of new CDs by Thomas Leeb, Peter Mulvey, the Mammals, and more.

Subscribers gain access to even more online features, including audio files and lessons, via the password included in each issue of Acoustic Guitar.

    BULLETIN BOARD

    Instructional DVD Review
Gene Bertoncini: The Art of Solo Jazz Guitar

Filmed in a master-class setting, jazz virtuoso Bertoncini gives a 90-plus-minute lesson that focuses mainly on harmonizing scale notes with chords up and down the neck of the guitar, helping you create the striking harmonic sounds for which this nylon-string fingerstyle master is known. He illustrates the process with minor-seven-flat-five chords, but it is applicable to any chord and scale. After using these chords in II-V-I progressions, Bertoncini integrates them into various jazz standards, giving full rein to his brilliant harmonic and single-line improvisational ideas in several extended performances that are highlights of the DVD. He also explains and demonstrates the use of open strings in chords, horizontal versus vertical scale positions, melodic improvisation, and many other areas of solo jazz-guitar playing. Occasionally Bertoncini’s extraordinary improvisations become so harmonically dense that less advanced guitarists may lose track of the idea Bertoncini is demonstrating. And now and then poor editing cuts Bertoncini off in mid-sentence and jumps ahead to the next sequence However, intermediate and advanced guitar students interested in exploring new horizons in solo guitar playing, particular in the realm of modern jazz harmony, can gain much from this DVD.
