NEW AT ACOUSTICGUITAR.COM

The April issue of Acoustic Guitar is on newsstands now.
Access these features, articles, and lessons online:
(To access special reader/subscriber features, including audio files and lessons, enter aprilfools when prompted.)

TRAD TRAILBLAIZER: Whether playing bluegrass standards, Irish fiddle tunes, eclectic original songs, or “House of the Rising Sun,” Tim O'Brien brings his own distinctive voice to the music. The wide-ranging multi-instrumentalist talks with Kenny Berkowitz sharing his keys to finding a personal sound and explaining how playing fiddle and mandolin sharpens his guitar skills.

NEW GEAR: With exotic woods and versatile electronics, the Ibanez EW20ASENT Acoustic-Electric is well-suited to budget-conscious performing guitarists. Check out the sounds online.

HERE'S HOW: Lissy Abraham helps you “Get Ready for Camp.” Music camp can be the most fun you'll have all year—but not if you're getting eaten by mosquitoes or your guitar has stopped working. Take a tip from the Boy Scouts: Be prepared.

Our annual Summer Study Guide is now online, with information on 126 camps and workshops. Browse the summer study listings:

LESSONS AND MUSIC TO PLAY:
(To access special reader/subscriber features, including audio files and lessons, enter aprilfools when prompted.)

  • THE BASICS: Once you’ve got your basic boom-chuck pattern down, you can help drive your bluegrass band from chord to chord with some well-placed bass runs. Scott Nygaard shows you how.
  • WOODSHED: Ron Forbes-Roberts teaches you to Jazz Up Your Blues. Give fingerstyle country-blues tunes new colors by adding cycle-of-fifth and other common jazz-style substitutions to the 12-bar form.

  • LICK OF THE MONTH: In Private Lesson, iconoclastic classical guitarist Benjamin Verdery talks to Mark Small about taking your time to play a phrase, articulating independent lines, and avoiding string squeaks. An excerpt from his composition “Let Go” allows you to practice a predominantly two-line texture.

LUTHIER'S WORKBENCH: Teja Gerken profiles Michigan-based guitar maker Del Langejans, who has developed a signature sound by using thick, rigid sides and rosewood necks.

READER'S RIG: Singer-songwriter/fingerstylist David Reed depends on a custom Steve Sauve Size 2 steel-string with an Engelmann spruce top and a rosewood armrest.

Each month we feature one of our readers’ rigs in the magazine. To be considered, send a description of your setup to editors.ag@stringletter.com

Also in the April issue: A feature article on how to use effects with acoustic guitar, in which Tim Reynolds, Monte Montgomery, Joseph Arthur, and Ben Harper tell Shawn Hammond how they do it; and five minilessons with David Hamburger, Wendy Waldman, Andrew DuBrock, Happy Traum, and Peppino d’Agostino.

Plus reviews of a new Martin 00-size acoustic guitar and the Laney A1 Acoustic Amplifier; music to Van Morrison’s “Brown-Eyed Girl,” Tim O’Brien’s version of Jimmie Rodgers’ “California Blues,” “Greenback Dollar, and Pepino d’Agostno’s arrangement of “House of the Rising Sun”; profiles of folk-rock singer-songwriter Laura Veirs and jazz guitarist Doug Wamble; reviews of new CDs by Rosanne Cash, Mark O’Connor’s Hot String Trio, Rhett Miller, Devendra Banhart, Catfish Keith, and others.

Subscribers gain access to even more online features, including audio files and lessons, via the password included in each issue of Acoustic Guitar.
