Bluegrass banjo pioneer Earl Scruggs and rockabilly guitarist Scotty Moore were recognized with lifetime achievement awards at the 2002 Orville H. Gibson Guitar Awards. Other winners included Dave Matthews and India.Arie, for Best Acoustic Guitarist, male and female.

National Public Radio's classical music program Performance Today recently chose guitarist Jason Vieaux as a Young Artist in Residence. A former first-prize winner at the Guitar Foundation of America's International Competition, Vieaux is currently on the faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Saint Paul, Minnesota's Musictech College recently expanded into a $3.6 million, 60,000 square foot facility, providing 10,000 square feet of recording studios and a 300-seat auditorium for the college's more than 250 instrumental and production students. In a ceremony held February 11, British folksinger Kate Rusby's "Who Will Sing Me Lullabies" won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Original Song. Martin Carthy was named Folksinger of the Year; Martin Simpson took home awards for Best Album (The Bramble Briar) and Best Instrumentalist; and Fairport Convention, Ralph McTell, and the Chieftains were all recognized with lifetime achievement awards.

Steve Kaufman has added a Fingerpicking Camp to his camp series (www.flatpik.com). The camp, taught by Stephen Bennett, Rolly Brown, Tommy Emmanuel, Pat Kirtley, Eddie Pennington, and Tony McManus, will be held June 9—15 at Tennessee's Maryville College.

The Resophonic Night Out festival will be held June 21—22 at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The festival includes master classes, workshops, jams, and concerts by Bob Brozman, Mike Auldridge, and Hull and Larson. For information, visit www.iresonation.org.

Allegheny Echoes' weeklong workshops (www.alleghenyechoes.com) in guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, voice, dulcimer, and songwriting will be held June 23—29 in the Snowshoe Mountain resort in West Virginia.

Capitol Records has reissued the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's landmark 1972 recording Will the Circle Be Unbroken. The first bluegrass album to go platinum, the recording features guest musicians Maybelle Carter, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Norman Blake, Vassar Clements, Merle Travis, and Roy Acuff. The remastered rerelease contains two new tracks and previously unseen photographs.

On Blue Country Heart, Jorma Kaukonen explores rural blues songs from the 1920s and '30s. The former Jefferson Airplane guitarist is joined by Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Byron House, and special guest Béla Fleck for his Columbia Records debut.

Country songwriter Harlan Howard died March 3 at age 74. Howard penned more than 100 Top 10 songs, including "I Fall to Pieces," "Busted," and "Heartaches by the Number," and holds the record for having the most songs (15) on the country charts at the same time. Howard's songs have been recorded by Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, the Judds, Trisha Yearwood, and Waylon Jennings.

Mark Vann, banjo player for jam band Leftover Salmon, died of cancer on March 4. After winning the banjo contest at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in 1989, Vann moved to Colorado to join the Left Hand String Band, which evolved into Leftover Salmon. Vann played on all the band's CDs, including the new Live (Compass).

Innovative old-time and world music bass player Dave Grant died in a work-related accident on March 5. Grant performed and recorded throughout North America and the British Isles with such musicians as Tony Furtado, Tim O'Brien, Peter Rowan, and Jones and Leva.
