Austin, Texas–based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist
Champ Hood died November 3, 2001, of complications related
to cancer. Hood’s easy-going spirit and command of many musical
styles, including Brazilian, bluegrass, and blues, made him a perfect
accompanist for the Austin elite. In the ’70s, Uncle Walt’s Band,
with Walter Hyatt and David Ball, provided Hood with the ideal medium
for his well-crafted songs and influenced musicians such as Lyle
Lovett, who later hired Hood for his Large Band. Hood was inducted
into the Texas Music Hall of Fame in 1996.
