Dan
Tyminski on a roll.
Dan Tyminski won four awards at the 2001 International Bluegrass
Music Association (IBMA) Awards held October 4 in Louisville, Kentucky.
Tyminski, who sings and plays guitar with Alison Krauss and Union
Station, was named Male Vocalist of the Year, and his version of
"Man of Constant Sorrow" from the soundtrack to O Brother, Where
Art Thou? (which took the prize for Album of the Year) was named
Song of the Year. Rhonda Vincent was named Female Vocalist
of the Year, and she and her band the Rage were named Entertainer
of the Year. Other pickers’ prizes went to Jim Hurst for
Guitar Player of the Year and Nickel Creek for Instrumental
Group of the Year, and the Carter Family was inducted into
the IBMA Hall of Fame.
Bob Dylan has signed a book deal with Simon and Schuster
to write between three and five volumes in a series of memoirs focusing
on his early career. Simon and Schuster will also publish Dylan’s
complete song lyrics.
The Everly Brothers, the Delmore Brothers, Waylon
Jennings, the Louvin Brothers, and Homer and Jethro
were among the artists inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame
in a ceremony held on October 4 in Nashville, Tennessee.
Taylor Guitars, San Diego music magazine SLAMM, and
the San Diego Music Awards Foundation united to donate more than
200 Baby Taylor guitars to San Diego elementary schools as part
of the Taylor Guitars for Schools program, which provides guitar
instruction and quality instruments to elementary school students.
Appalachian singer-songwriter Hazel Dickens and thumbpicking
guitar player Eddie Pennington were among the recipients
of the 2001 National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowships,
the country’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts.

A New Year’s Eve concert at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville,
Tennessee, will benefit the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund,
which provides scholarships to needy children and spouses of the
victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The event will be
hosted by Dolly Parton, who will perform with an all-star

Lutenist Paul O’Dette will conduct a master class January
16 and perform January 17 as part of the Augustine Guitar Series
at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. Details about

Pete Wernick’s Banjo Camp will be held in three separate
sessions in Boulder, Colorado, this month. Beginners get rolling
January 8–12, intermediate jammers congregate January 15–19, and
advanced pluckers convene January 22–26. Scholarships are available

Head south for wintertime festival fun at the South Florida
Folk Festival, January 19–20 in Oakland Park, Florida. Performers
