Richard Smith took home first prize in the fingerpicking
guitar competition and Adam Wright was the winning flatpicker
at this year’s Walnut Valley Festival, held September 13–16 in Winfield,
Kansas. Mark Anthony Cruz and Andy McKee nabbed the second and third
place awards in the fingerpicking division while Steve Lewis and
Matt Lindsey were the second and third place flatpickers.
Singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn has signed a multi-album
contract with Rounder Records. A greatest-hits disc will appear
early in 2002 followed by Cockburn’s new studio recording later
in the year. Rounder will also reissue 18 earlier Cockburn titles,
originally released between 1970 and 1990, and will distribute True
North Records, Cockburn’s Canadian label.

The Bluegrass in the Schools committee of the International
Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) offers supplemental funding grants
for in-school programs that present bluegrass music. For more information,

The winners of the 2001 International Competition of Guitar, held
July 5–7 in Mottola, Italy, were guitarists Emiliano Castiglioni
(first place), Marcin Dylla (second), and Krivocapic Goran and Devine
Graham Anthony, who tied for third. The ten-day festival featured
concerts and lectures, and the competition drew 36 competitors from
around the globe.

The Django Reinhardt Festival will take place November 27–December
2 at Birdland in New York City. The Gypsy jazz extravaganza features
performances by Frank Vignola, Boulou and Elios Ferre, Dorado Schmitt,
