BMG Entertainment, the world’s second-largest recording company, has decided to use the embedded antipiracy technology MediacloQ™, which will inhibit consumers from duplicating its compact discs. Earlier this year, the first commercially available CD featuring the protective technique, Charley Pride’s A Tribute to Jim Reeves, was released by Music City Records. Sony Pictures Classics will release the documentary Grateful Dawg on October 5 in Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco, with national distribution on following weekends. Directed by David Grisman’s daughter, Gillian, the film focuses on the musical relationship between Grisman and Jerry Garcia in the 1990s and includes full versions of many songs, interviews with friends and family, and footage from live shows the two played around the San Francisco Bay Area. Great Reissues

Vanguard Records is in the process of rereleasing Joan Baez’ entire 14-album catalog. Joan Baez, Joan Baez Vol. 2, and Noel were the first to receive the deluxe reissue treatment, which adds new artwork, previously unreleased material from the original recording sessions, and additional liner notes to the original folk scare–era classics.

Mark Pritcher’s transcription book of Tone Poems II (published by Mel Bay) lets guitarists and mandolinists delve deeper into David Grisman’s classic collaboration with jazz guitarist Martin Taylor.

Art Edelstein’s book Fair Melodies, Turlough Carolan: An Irish Harper (published by Noble Stone Press, www.sover.net/arte/fairm.htm) contains everything you ever wanted to know about the blind harpist, including a biography, an extensive discography, interviews with well-known Celtic musicians, and a 21-track recording.
