Genre-mixing pioneer Sandy Bull died April 11 at age 60.
An acoustic and electric guitarist, Bull was introduced to the oud
by Hamza El Din and went on to compose works for guitar, oud, and
other stringed instruments that incorporated elements of classical,
jazz, and ethnic music. His 1963 recording Fantasias for Guitar
and Banjo was an underground classic that influenced the likes
of Joan Baez, Steve Winwood, and Jimi Hendrix. In 1999, Vanguard
Records released Re-Inventions: Best of the Vanguard Years, which
included Bull’s signature piece "Blend," a 22-minute improvisational
romp with jazz drummer Billy Higgins, who passed away May 3.

With Dan Hicks’ resurrected Hot Licks currently touring
the country, Epic/Legacy’s newly released The Most of Dan Hicks
and the Hot Licks is particularly welcome. The reissue consists
of tracks from the ethereally twisted string-swing band’s 1969 debut,
Original Recordings, as well as selected cuts from later
albums and a few unreleased songs.
Old folkies will want to revisit the ’60s Greenwich Village
folk scene with Rhino Record’s three-CD box set, Washington
Square Memoirs: The Great Urban Folk Boom (1950–1970) and then
curl up with David Hajdu’s new book Positively Fourth
Street: The Lives and Times of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez Fariña,
and Richard Fariña (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux).
Musician’s Workshop (www.musicians-workshop.com) has released two
new videos by jazz guitarist and arranger John Carlini: Chord
Solo Guitar, Vols. 1 and 2. On each tape, Carlini, who has collaborated
with David Grisman, Tony Rice, and others, teaches chord-solo arrangements
of five standard tunes ("Take the A Train," "Norwegian Wood," "One-Note
Samba") in both fingerpicking and flatpicking styles.
