Hem's Equipment Picks
What They Play.

By Anand Nayak

Hem’s STEVE CURTIS and GARY MAURER switch off between guitars and mandolins. The guitars include a 1969 Gibson Hummingbird and 1985 Gibson J-100, equipped with B-Band two-pickup systems and onboard preamps, and a 1973 Guild D-25 with a DeArmond soundhole pickup. All guitars are strung with D’Addario phosphor-bronze mediums or lights. Their mandolins are a 1917 Gibson F4 and a 1999 Bussman A, both with D’Addario J74 strings and Pick-up the World contact pickups, mounted between the bridge and tailpiece. The guitars and mandolins all go through L.R. Baggs Para Acoustic DIs. Other instruments include a 1971 Gibson Les Paul Custom plugged into a 1968 Fender Vibrolux amp. BOB HOFFNAR plays an Ivan Guernsey single-cone resonator (strung with D’Addario EJ42s) and Franklin D10 doubleneck pedal steels amplified by a 1966 Fender Showman head and a THD 2 by 12 custom speaker cabinet.
