The Villa-Lobos Duo, Tanzologia

By Julia Crowe

This recording showcases the beautiful instrumental pairing of cellist Sven Holger Philippsen and his new guitar-playing partner Boyan Karanjuloff in a varied and dynamic performance. “Contempotango,” the first piece in the title suite by composer Atanas Ourkouzounov, combines a rich, sonorous cello melody and a rhythmic guitar pulse generated by slapping percussive effects on the strings and soundboard, ending with unusual, sweeping siren-like effects from the cello. “Bulgarian Rock” bursts forth with a bold 11/8 dance rhythm that shows off Karanjuloff’s ease on the guitar as the piece drives toward a dramatic, atonal, and fiery ending punctuated by flamenco-style cries. Heitor Villa-Lobos’ “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5” provides a lovely, calming juxtaposition. Philippsen’s cello is powerfully expressive without overwhelming the bright, crisp tones of the guitar. Indeed, both musicians are adept at allowing each other to take turns advancing to the foreground. Thoughtful, meditative renderings of composer Duˇsan Bogdanovi´c’s “Quatre Pièces Intimes” and Ernest Bloch’s “From Jewish Life” provide more somber counterpoints to the Eastern melodies that open this well-balanced and compelling album.
