EXCLUSIVE SONG: Singer-Songwriter Patrick Park Premieres ‘My Holding Hand is Empty’

Posted on March 20, 2014 | by Mark Segal Kemp

Colorado-born singer-songwriter Patrick Park got a big mainstream boost in 2007 when his gentle, Donovan-esque "Life Is a Song” capped the final episode of the popular Fox TV series The O.C. It was a huge feather in Park’s cap, but he’d been writing acoustic-based folk songs and releasing albums long before then, and he continues honing his craft today.

Park premieres his latest song “My Holding Hand is Empty” exclusively at Acoustic Guitar through Friday. It’s one of the highlights from Park's upcoming fourth album, Love Like Swords, available April 22 from Downward Road Recordings at iTunes and other music distributors.

Produced and mixed by Park and Dave Trumfio (Wilco, OK Go, Built To Spill), the album runs from upbeat tracks with horns and harmonies to moments of sweet, wistful solitude. “My holding hand is empty, my reservations few,” Park sings here over warm finger-picked acoustic guitar and cool strings, “been looking everywhere for something, I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”

“I played a 1967 Martin 000-18 on this song,” Park says. “I use it on pretty much all my recordings where it’s mostly finger-picking.”

Park has performed with bands both large and small, and shared stages with similarly minded folk-rockers including Beth Orton, David Grey, and My Morning Jacket. But he says there’s something special about performing solo—just him and his 000-18. “Musically, it's direct and pure, and there's nothing to hide behind, no way to cop out,” he says.

Park will kick off a national tour in Dallas, Texas, on April 8, with stops along the way in Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, New York City and more. See below for a complete list of dates:
