Bob Dylan in the 1980's Tribute Album Lineup Announced
Bob Dylan--'80s icon. Sound about two decades off? Not according to a new album, set for release March 25, which attempts to shed new light on the folk-rock legend's often-ignored 1980s period.
Bob Dylan In The 80s: Volume One (ATO) features new takes on Dylan's Me Decade years by such artists as Built To Spill, Aaron Freeman of Ween, Slash, Deer Tick, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and others.
The album focuses on an 11-year span--from 1980's Saved to 1990's Under the Red Sky, plus unreleased tracks (an '80s Basement Tapes anyone?) and the Traveling Wilburys--which the album's producers Jesse Lauter and Sean O'Brien feel is an overlooked period for the artist.
"Given the benefit of decades more hindsight," author Jonathan Lethem writes in the album liner notes, "our Dylan was a lot better than anyone knew."
Other artists appearing on Bob Dylan In The 80s include Glen Hansard ("Pressing On"), Reggie Watts ("Brownsville Girl"), Lucius ("When the Night Comes Falling from the Sky"), Langhorne Slim ("Got My Mind Made Up"), Craig Finn ("Sweetheart Like You"), Dawn Landes ("Dark Eyes"), and Carl Broemel ("Death is Not the End"), and Elvis Perkins
Portions of the proceeds from album sales will go to Pencils of Promise, a nonprofit that builds schools and promotes educational opportunities in the developing world.
