J35 image

One-of-a-Kind Vintage Gibson Sold

In August of 2012, Mark Stutman, owner of Folkway Music in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, was contacted about an old guitar that was found under a bed somewhere in Iowa. Intrigued by the description he was given on the phone, he asked for a few photographs. Though the pictures he received were what one might call "low-res," Stutman saw enough to know that he had a true rarity on his hands: a 1941 Gibson J-35, in mint condition. Soon after, he flew to Iowa, bought the instrument, and held on to it for a couple of years.

D'Angelico Unveils New Line of Acoustics

For most of the past 50 or so years, the esteemed D'Angelico brand was largely dormant, but since being purchased by a trio of entrepreneurs in 2013, D'Angelico has become rejuvenated. Inspired by John D'Angelico's original designs, the company's recent output of archtops, mostly manufactured in South Korea, may never approach the tonal and cosmetic excellence of their predecessors, but they have still won a growing number of new fans. As the D'Angelico resurgence continues, the company has added a range of new models to the catalog, including eight acoustic guitars introduced at the recent NAMM show in Anaheim.

Tom Paxton

Listen to an Exclusive Track from Folk Legend Tom Paxton

It’s been more than five decades since folk music icon Tom Paxton first burst out of Greenwich Village coffee houses and clubs and established himself as one of the most original songwriters in that exciting and important musical scene. His diverse songs ranged from astute and sometimes moving socially conscious anthems to poignant love songs, humorous ditties, and quietly profound philosophical musings. It wasn’t long before singers were lining up to record his tunes; indeed, Paxton’s songs have been covered by such notables as Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul & Mary, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Harry Belafonte, Doc Watson, John Denver, Willie Nelson, and many others. It’s no wonder he was given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.
