David Rawlings and Kenneth Pattengale

I love the music of David Rawlings with Gillian Welch and Kenneth Pattengale with the Milk Carton Kids. How do you learn to flow like these guys? I've been playing cross-picking and looking into Norman Blake and Doc Watson's styles, but I want to play like Dave. It's not easy! Besides his interview in the magazine, got any hints?

Thanks, Scott. I went back and studied Blake and Watson, but I'll transcribe the guys now and stop waiting for someone else to do the work.

I think that if you really want to play "like" someone, whether it's Dave or anyone, the best thing is to transcribe and learn some of their solos--as many as you can. Or start by just learning a few of your favorite licks or phrases. And by transcribing them yourself instead of just reading someone else's transcription, you'll start to hear things the way they did.
